I’m kinda able to pick up context here from several very subtle clues, not gonna lie 😬

That’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.

Building in the background is at 1001 R St NW, Washington, DC 20001.

It looks like the road (and fence) have been removed and the intersection is now a 3-way.

Appears to be legit colourised image and not ai slop. The sharpness of the image threw me.

Preview of black and white photo on alamy.

    Apparently was colourised by /u/mygrapefruit.

The quality you can get by scanning film is insane (assuming it’s been preserved correctly)

If my wiki-searching is right, those vehicles were rear-wheel drive.

So, it only needed chains on the rear tires.

Preferable to have them on the front tires too, but not required.

The front left might have fallen off while he was driving, or he might have only had the third one to begin with (possibly as an extra) and added it for additional traction in these poor conditions (but it wasn’t enough).

Not a forensic carologist but it almost looks like he got t-boned (old fashioned style at 25mph, of course) and lost control (at a brisk 27mph) and hit the fence

It’s hard to make fun of them when they were driving a 1500 lb steel box on what are essentially bicycle tires, hah. I imagine they have no grip whatsoever

Bicycle tires with round nubbin tread! It looks like they’re just about bald too, which I’m sure didn’t help

I wonder if there’s a way to bring that tread style to the modern world, it looks really interesting compared to what we have now (minus the baldness)

So they were aware of the icy conditions and applied chains on 2 (3?) of the tires. I wonder what’s the story behind the rest not being covered (in case of the obvious “no more chain” scenario, what was the idea behind the diagonal alignment).
