Am I the only one who really hates that comment section is slowly turning into gen-z discord channel where people communicate in reaction gifs?
Couldn’t resist… the gif suits nearly any situation
It’s this attitude that drives meme culture into the ground. Like no, memes arise because they convey a specific feeling in a specific context. You just want to use the same picture to respond to everything because you have no personality
afaik on the PC browsers Reddit Enhancement Suite allows further control of how content is presented, but on the app you still have to avert your eyes.
Images weren’t even allowed in comments until like 2019 or something. I remember being horrified when I first saw one and blocked them in ublock origin immediately.
Hold on while I’m looking for an appropriate reaction gif…
One of my favourite Lemmy features is that you can comment media in every community. I comment GIFs a lot. Haven’t heard any complaints about it though. I am Gen Z though so that might be why I don’t see the issue lol.
That was not my point. If we get to the stage where it’s often hard to find comments themselves, then I might start complaining about lemmy too
Seems kinda entitled tbh
What does that have to do with entitlement
It’s not like this is every comment section no matter what the post is about. What I’m seeing is other people are at times engaging in a way that doesn’t appeal to you and you feel the need to complain. To me that’s entitlement. If you want comments just comment something. What’s a rant post supposed to change?
Then I say I don’t mind because I’m one of those people (not just on Lemmy, that was admittedly phrased ambiguously) and you say that’s not your point. Like ok but it’s the answer you’re getting?
I will openly admit that I’m biased because bringing up Gen Z as a placeholder for “stuff I dislike” when GIFs are literally used by every generation (family group chats on whatsapp are very notorious for it) already ticked me off a little but I’m not trying to insult you. It’s just my genuine take.
I don’t think OP is totally against reaction memes or GIFs.
But I think in this particular screenshot the quality of the memes is very low and the quantity is too high. Like they’re all just very common reaction memes of peoples faces, and they’re really not clever or funny at all in the context of the thread. So it’s just a bunch of jackwagons all trying to make the same lame, tired joke and upvoting each other.
Reaction GIFs can be good content but they have to be clever and fit the situation. Reddit threads are extremely watered down at this stage and there just aren’t enough unique, interesting comments to make it worth wading through all the slop.
I don’t think entitlement has anything to do with this though. Anyone who used the internet and Reddit for a long time (and/or uses Lemmy now) knows that the current version of Reddit is flooded with low-effort basic content compared to how it used to be. Just commenting doesn’t do anything, because the onslaught of low-effort drivel and badly executed memes totally drowns out everyone else from having any kind of substantive discussion.
Thanks for mediating. OPs follow up comment supports your interpretation. I guess it was a misunderstanding more than anything.
For starters, I already explained that I was not trying to hate on Gen-Z, it just felt like a good way to describe it as that’s how discord chats normally look like. The same discord channels I post reaction gifs to.
Secondly, I’m expressing worrysome over the increasing trend of flooding the comment section with gifs, which just makes real comments harder to spot. It is not entitlement, it is simply being annoyed by something. Entitlement would be demanding from others to stop it imo, but I never said such things and my goal here isn’t to change people, but … well, to simply rant and see if I’m the only one who gets annoyed by this.
Lastly, I’m barely 31 so not really “old man yelling at cloud”, but to make you better understand by bitterness about it - I see reddit as a great source of information, opinions and just generally a place you’d go if you wanted to read something (hence the reddit’s name essentially being read it). Imagine looking up on google in future “Problem X reddit”, but all you find is reaction gifs. Im exaggareting of course, but you get the idea. Just does not seem like a place for it
Oh ok yeah I think I get it now. I guess I took the caption very literally. And I mean sure there’s a time and a place for those types of replies. I probably just haven’t been exposed to spammed gifs to the same extent so I misunderstood the intention of the post.
I can’t comment there anymore. However, now and then I check posts/comments that seem interesting to read but perhaps the subreddits I check are different than yours. Also… the GenZ influence is staggering. I miss the old internet where people just developed a thick skin and still engaged. But then, I am old.
Reddit comments have always been insufferable, this is just a 2025 makeover.
The few times I visit the page: Not on my front page.
Are you browsing all?
If yes, I know what’s the problem.Darn kids should get off my
lawninternet!!! 😤How boomer of me, wanting to see comments in comments
It’s just as worthless as comment chains of songs, which were there before gifs. It’s always been shit, it’s just a slightly different shit now.
Hey now, you’re an allstar
A picture is worth a thousand words

You sound so Boomerish
somehow and luckily images appear as a link(button) instead of directly loading for me on old reddit so i just ignore them.
No-one’s forcing you to look at them.
Fake. There is no bot shilling some SaaS with 1000 paid updoots.
Is it related to SpaceX starship?
Top comment was something along the lines of “bricks finally seeing sunlight after all these years”
I would not be surprised if most of those are bots as it seems really easy to automate reaction gifs with help of AI and how upvoted they get. Ez karma farm
Reddit is trash, but gen Z was a mistake
I wasn’t trying to shit on gen-z, just that comments under a submission looking like a gen-z discord channel seems really annoying and unfitting for reddit (and lemmy too, but they’re not being overused here). I just turned 30 and myself constantly use reaction gifs on discord, so it’s not like I’m against them in general. Different places calls for different ways of communicating.
