I should probably be berated admitting this in c/RaygunGothic, but somehow I had never seen Forbidden Planet… until last night. (On PeerTube. Thanks, Fediverse, for finally making it happen!)
I’d kept meaning to see it year after year, decade after decade, without it ever happening. I even went to the namesake shop a few times back in the 80s and 90s.
I thought it would be cheesy, but it actually maintained a great atmosphere of suspense, thanks not only to the interesting story and wonderful cast, but also to the still spooky fully-electronic score.
- “Leslie Nielsen all serious… and with hair that’s not white!!!”
- “So this is where it all began: we are all part of the Robby the Robot Cinematic Universe.”
- “That’s Honey West!” (I.e. Anne Francis, dare I say it, the US Honor Blackman.)
[Looking things up on Wikipedia today]
- “Holy Moly, Earl Holliman (Cookie) was still with us until a few months ago!”
- “Banned in Spain?? Oh right, this was 1956, not 1966. Miniskirts were truly shocking then.”
Found some high quality images of posters, lobby cards etc here:
Overall, a great film. Two robot thumbs up! Or five out of five ray guns. Whatever the top score here is ;)
I also hadn’t watched Forbidden Planet until recently, and after I saw it I thought, “I feel like I just witnessed the common ancestor for all science fiction since then.”
Has this movie been done for Monsterdon yet? It’s a perfect fit.
spoiler
For Monsterdon, do “monsters of the id” count? ;)
Re info here https://wiki.neuromatch.social/Monsterdon - OK, I managed to subscribe to the #monsterdon live Peertube channel via my instance. I’ve also searched Lemmy and remembered #monsterdon gets posted to c/BMovieBonanza a lot, but comparing the two I think the Peertube channel hasn’t been updated for a month or so.
Also I don’t see Forbidden Planet there, although the screenshot of ‘Turkish Star Wars’ features a very Robbyesque robot :D
Also #2, I don’t have a Mastodon account. Still not sure how the various fediverse services (and even different instances on the same service) interact. If someone posts with the #monsterdon hashtag, will I see it on Lemmy? No idea where. Guess I’ll just have to get a Mastodon account just to be sure.
Yes, that’s what I was talking about. Sometimes someone will put the movie on a peertube channel, but not always – usually they’re available on the free streaming website https://tubi.tv/. I’m not sure if lemmy picks up Mastodon posts via hashtags; most people are definitely posting from Mastodon or similar micro-blogging-type servers.
Tubi used to have movies in English here in Mexico, but now they’re all dubbed in Spanish. But I’ve read up the other Monsterdon info on viewing movies, and I’m comfortable sailing the high seas.
