“While we don’t know how Schäfer defines “a true GTI,” the report adds that the electric GTI will remain front-wheel-drive.”
“The ID.2 will be the tip of the electric hot hatch iceberg. Beyond the Golf GTI, the portfolio will ultimately grow to include an electric successor to the Golf R that will retain the current car’s all-wheel-drive layout.”
“Auto Express adds that Volkswagen will continue to update the current, eighth-generation Golf through the end of the decade. There’s no word yet on whether that means the current GTI will live on until 2030.”
I’m going to start saving for an electric Golf R now. Absolute dream car.
Yeah I wouldn’t mind an Electric Golf R, but then as an estate to run it alongside my (dream) MX-5.
For now I’ll hold on to my 2018 Seat Leon Cupra ST.
I hope it has good range. I’ve always wanted a Golf and was seriously checking these out when I wanted an EV years ago but the range was horrendous and it seemed like VW just gave up on it after a while.
VW signed various deals with Rivian a bit back, so I assume they are helping them get back on track.
Where are potential EV Golf competitors at regarding range? I’m not too familiar with the EV hatchback segment tbh.
Kia EV4 Hatchback announced with 590km WLTP range in Long Range trim.
