The CD and 32X were effectively just life support to keep the Genesis alive while Nintendo put out a whole new generation of console. Sega could’ve leapfrogged Nintendo’s SNES if their follow-up to the 16-bit cartridge based Genesis and competitor to the 16-bit cartridge based SNES had been the 32-bit disc based Saturn, but in 1993 instead of 1994-95. “Nintendo just caught up to what we’re leaving behind.” Video game history would be incredibly different. Nintendo would’ve maybe lost a significant amount of market share to Sega. Sony might’ve stayed out of it or at least would’ve had real disc competition. Sega might’ve stayed in the hardware game, which maybe would’ve kept Microsoft from entering since there’s no vacuum to fill. This might’ve affected PC gaming too since devs could basically double dip their work to put out very similar games on both PC and Xbox.

Sega CD was successful in that it kept Sega players from jumping over to buying a SNES. Idk how that worked though because an entire SNES was cheaper than the Sega CD add-on. They could only sell games to people who had already bought a Genesis AND shelled out a SNES and a half worth to keep it relevant. If you didn’t own a Genesis or a SNES and you’re at Circuit City or whatever looking at them, it’s kinda hard to not choose the SNES. Genesis was $150 while the SNES was $200, sure, but the SNES was new and polished while the Genesis was already 2 years old AND they felt the need to release a $300 add-on to keep up with the SNES. So if you’re trying to get your money’s worth, you could either spend $300 on a SNES and a couple of games, or you could spend about the same for an older console and maybe one or two extra games, or you could dump $450 (equivalent to $1,019 in 2024) and still not have any games. So how in the fuck did the Sega CD succeed? Sega was just really good at marketing, I guess.

This is a pretty solid summary. Part of why they didn’t make their money back on software was because of how easy it was to copy and share. It didn’t help that they had alienated so many 3rd party devs by prematurely abandoning platforms so many times. They stuck with the Genesis for a long time, trickled out 32X and CD add-ons and only put out a handful of games for those, released and immediately ditched the Saturn, and then didn’t go as all in on the Dreamcast as they probably should’ve. At least they knew to cancel the Neptune, which was just gonna be a standalone 32X.

They should’ve not done the CD and 32X and instead dumped those resources into getting the Saturn out like a year earlier. Then they could’ve taken their time building that library, and then go all in on the Dreamcast, bringing lots of 3rd party support that happily made money off of betting on the Saturn. But hindsight is 20/20.

Kernel level anticheat for a few games is the only real speedbump I’m aware of, and it’s only on a couple of game franchises like CoD I think. I would love it a ton of people made the switch and it hurt those games’ companies revenue noticeably enough that they look for a way to moderate cheating without just lazily requiring Windows in order to play online.

Linux is finally convenient enough to realistically steal swaths of customers from Microsoft, and it’s at the same time that Windows 11 is pissing a ton of people off. We’re in for some strange times.

I don’t have the kind of job that can be done remotely, but I’m all for remote work where it’s possible and desired. My best friend hated working from home at the height of covid because he’s an extrovert who can’t really afford to go out much. Now he works from home Mondays and Fridays and I think it’s kinda the best of both worlds for him. I think that employers that already have office space for workers that could effectively do their job from home should give workers a choice. Maybe hybrid workers have required scheduled days in the office just to make sure they’re there to attend necessary meetings or collaborations or whatever rather than it just be them coming in when they feel like it, but the technology has caught up to allow way more flexibility than ever before. If I had a 100% desk job, I would move somewhere cheaper and never come in. I know I’m not alone there, and I think there’s no reason to hold that option hostage. Covid proved that it could be done for most white collar work, and we can’t let them try to squeeze that Pandora back into its box.

It’s a gamble because they don’t list games until streams are broadcasting, but I have a probable source for you. Pull up a browser. Type into the URL the word foot and then the letter y and then the word bite. Next type a period, and then the letter c twice. Hit enter. Hopefully spelling it out this way keeps it from getting ruined.

Using a laptop connected to a TV via HDMI works pretty well, but be ready to refresh or choose a different link once or twice per half if there’s a lot of web traffic.

I haven’t tried it myself, but a friend used LMMS for a bit and put together some pretty good sounding songs. He just couldn’t get vocal recording to sound good so he lost interest, but that’s probably more on him than any software issues. Idk what the sample situation is with LMMS, but if you weren’t aware of it, I’d say that’s worth looking into.

I’ve started playing around with Reaper (I used Audacity for a very long time) and it seems to be a really good DAW. If you find samples in .wav format, it would be very easy to import those and adjust them however you need. I’m far from fluent in Reaper though so I’m sorry to say I can’t offer much help in navigating it.

I got into this for hockey streams. Sometimes, especially for high traffic events (like the super bowl), streams get pretty rough for me.

Another source that’s mostly for soccer streams (if anybody here could benefit from this into) could be found just by googling the words foot and bite, but replace the space between those words with the letter Y. Very handy to be able to find for in the background or on breaks while at work, especially around the world cup.

Marriage isn’t for everybody, and that’s okay. As long as you aren’t stringing partners along who are looking to get married when you already know that you aren’t, then your choice doesn’t seem to be hurting anybody.

I’m 35 and married. Sure, tastes change, but my wife and I chose good partners in each other; we won’t hate each other or get irreparably sick of each other, we make a great team, and we understand each other’s limitations and are mature enough to ask for help. We let each other in. There is security and stability in marriage. I’m not great at meeting new people, so not having to go on another first date again is a huge relief for me. Making a good first impression is fucking exhausting. In contrast, I know how my wife is feeling pretty much just by glancing at her, and it’s really fulfilling to be on the same wavelength as my partner like that, especially because we’re also open communicators who can share the honest, fucked up feelings without worrying about judgment. So we’re basically each other’s therapist, but we share housework and meals and money, and we snuggle and kiss and fuck. I can understand that that’s not appealing to everybody, but it’s hard for me to imagine a version of myself who doesn’t want this. But again, it’s not for everybody, and it’s perfectly okay to not want it for yourself.

My favorite is when there’s a countdown to hit skip, but it stays on zero and plays for an extra couple of seconds without letting me skip, and then another ad plays with a fresh skip countdown.

Or yesterday, when the video locked up because it was apparently time for an ad, but the ad wouldn’t play. So I gave up and tried to play a different video, but none of the videos would play because there was still an ad that was supposed to play at me and it wouldn’t play. So I stopped watching YouTube for the day.

None of us would mind brief, infrequent ads, but your greed is fucking the whole platform to the point that regular people are looking for a competitor. You did a Streisand Effect to adblock extensions, so now everybody knows about them. You squeezed creators into doing sponsored videos because you stopped paying them. You harassed us with non-stop pestering about YouTube TV and YouTube Red or premium or plus or whatever the fuck it is this year. You’ve forgotten what the point of YouTube originally was. It used to be a place for regular people like YOU to host a video, and now it’s pretty much just small businesses doing the 21st century version of public access TV.

I did this at the interview for the power plant I’ve been working at for the past 2.5 years. There was a 3 person panel interviewing me and I think they were impressed that I not only asked this but kept asking it through vague bullshit answers. They initially just said “the previous guy left.” And I just sat there for about 10 seconds, waiting for more info than that. Then I said “okay, did he quit, get fired, put in his notice, retire, get demoted, get promoted, become disabled, die off site, die while here…?” He had gone to a different company, but I was uneasy from their hesitance to be forthcoming, so I dug into questions about the culture there, work/life balance, advancement opportunities, safety record, management style, and (maybe my favorite) “what does success in this role look like and how are your feedback and expectations of that communicated to employees?”

They seemed uncomfortable and impatient, but because I already had a decent job at the time I had nothing to lose by swinging my dick around and cutting the bullshit. I highly recommend applying and interviewing for jobs while you’re already reasonably well-employed. It’s great practice, it keeps your resume up to date, you learn real negotiation tactics, and you get to decline offers that aren’t a substantial step up. About a year and a half ago, I did a video interview in my underwear where the manager and supervisor running the interview couldn’t hear me so I was live troubleshooting and resolved their issue. I got an offer, rejected it by telling HR to come back with a higher offer, got the same offer a week later, asked the HR lady why she wasn’t capable of listening to my instructions and was wasting my time with greedy negotiation tactics (which really annoyed her), asked for her name and the name of her supervisor while wholeheartedly rejecting any offer that would come from her, reported the experience to her supervisor, got a call back from the HR lady full of apologies (which I didn’t forgive but thanked her for), and emailed the supervisor I had interviewed with to thank him and let him know that everything sounded great but I couldn’t work for a company whose HR department was that shitty to me before I even verbally accepted an offer. Because of the nature of my industry and our relatively young ages, I told him I wouldn’t be surprised if I wound up working with him somewhere within the next ten years anyway, and I looked forward to that within a company that respects its employees as much as he seems to.

For those who don’t already know, HR exists to fuck the workers in order to benefit the company. Do not trust a goddamn thing HR says. Get everything documented. Record everything they say if it’s legal to do so in your state. If not, draft immediate, timestamped memos (like an email to yourself) of everything that just happened and was said, and be objective with your phrasing.

He has legit fantastic comedic timing and deadpan delivery. He makes it genuinely fun to learn about how fucked we are because of how badly we knowingly fucked the planet.
