Apple talks big about privacy but we only have their word for it, and they’re a corporation just as likely to lie and muddle things to fool their customers. That’s my main problem concerning Apple and privacy.

On paper their approach to ML is probably the best I’ve seen from any corp, and it’s probably the best I could’ve hoped to see since there’s no way they’d outright not go down that route.

I’m really glad for you, that sounds amazing. I don’t think you’re the rule, though. I think you’re the exception. I also feel like it wouldn’t be unfeasible to have competitive/e-sports poker while still strictly regulating online casinos.

That explains why they all seem so samey. E.g. online casinos never have any sort of physical presence like scratch cards or what have you, even though we have plenty of scratch cards.

I used to hook up with a guy who was 100% convinced that he could game the system. It had something to do with break frequencies from various services and certain time windows for playing. He won sometimes, but he obviously didn’t talk much about his losses. He wasn’t a very happy person, and I think gambling offered an easy release.

That’s my big issue with gambling. It’s a business preying on addicts leaving many in financial ruin, and overall they do nothing for society at large. Here in Sweden it is regulated, but you honestly don’t notice it. There are so many internet casinos vanishing and cropping up on an almost daily basis. If you turn on the radio the adverts are like 40% online casinos, 40% sex toy sites, and 20% various services, like tyre shifting, glass repairs, etc.

That’s fair, this is one part of the story, and it’s not like screenshots can’t be doctored. Any screenshot taken from the web is ridiculously easy to manipulate.

That said, my feelings towards economic vampires aside, the way the events unfolded is concerning to say the least. Cloudflare has been racking up evil-corp points quite rapidly in recent months.

Yeah. My mother is getting phishing emails and genuinely believes that Nancy Pelosi is sending her emails asking for monetary support. We’re not even American. Like, not even the same continent.

Not everyone is as critical as they ought to be when reading stuff on the internet. It doesn’t help that LLMs have a tendency to state things confidently or matter-of-factly.

People not familiar with the tech will read it and take it at face value, ignoring the “this is AI generated and might be wrong” because that sounds too technological to some people that their brain doesn’t even process it.

It’s definitely not an accident. This is Cuntman’s goal.

I mean these kinds of “AI companions” are grifts anyway. They won’t take off because they are a solution looking for a problem. They aren’t as affordable as the entry level HomePod/Amazon Pod/Google Home units, so they can’t be bought as a “why not, and it’s a speaker anyway” type thing. They don’t have any secondary functionality you don’t already have in your phone.

And if that’s not enough, you can bet your cute arse on that Apple and Google are both working on bringing LLM functions into their assistants, basically making these units obsolete.

The moment that these companies decide that they can’t afford to pay for servers and API subscriptions anymore, the service will die and you’ll end up with a colourful brick. Don’t buy these things, they’re unfinished and will die within a year or two.

Honestly every single Google product should be added to it with a “TBD” or “Coming Soon” on the death date.

The thing that trips me up most about this subject is that 140 years ago, pork fat was very good for seasoning cast iron. Today, it isn’t, because the composition of the fat has changed significantly.

Yeah, I don’t think Proton would be my go-to choice for VPN when it comes to privacy. I’ve heard stuff about them actually keeping logs. In that case I’d be more interested in Mullvad since they just run their service on RAM. I did give the Proton VPN a spin, and at least as far as speeds go, it’s pretty fast. They give you a notice if you use the “Secure Core” feature, stating that the connection speed might end up being a bit slow, but it still seems to reach the cap of my wifi (500mbit) so it honestly isn’t that bad. So for streaming region locked stuff it seems to do the job. “Secure Core” as far as I can tell, just tunnels your connection through several nodes, I’m not well versed enough on networking to know how that could possibly improve security, because to me it sounds like adding more points of failure.

I do really like the email service and the password manager, and I’m sure I’ll get some use from the drive as well at some point. When signing up for things, the password manager automatically suggests masking your email. Would’ve killed for something like that ten years ago; my gmail account is flooded with useless BS that it’s nice to finally move away from it.

Yeah. I don’t really feel like VPNs are that necessary, though I also sort of get having it as a product. For me it wasn’t really that tough a choice; I already paid $5 monthly for Dashlane, Proton Pass was a bit of an upgrade in terms of features (though they don’t seem to check haveibeenpwned like Dashlane), and it came with a bunch of other services I really could use.

All that said, I believe they have a free-tier for all of their services, so you could always dip your toes in, see how you feel about it, and decide later if you think it’s worth it or not?

As a complete aside, your username has me convinced to buy some plopp. It is Saturday after all.

I recently swapped over from Dashlane to Proton, and I don’t regret it at all. Plus I can decouple my stuff from Google, and use my own domain for my personal email, which I can then give out to individuals and hide behind aliases for companies/services. I rather like it. The VPN seems solid enough too, though I’ve nary a use for such things.

Oh yeah, absolutely. I’m not saying that obesity is good, but I also don’t think we can judge people for it. If someone is learning how to love themselves, who are we to stand in their way for it?

Maybe they need that self love to push them forward and lose that weight? Maybe not. Regardless I don’t think telling people how they should or shouldn’t dress will bring anyone any sort of good.

It’s that old saying “if you don’t have anything good to say, perhaps don’t say anything at all.”

We all have our own attractions, that’s fine. However, people don’t have to meet our standards of beauty to exist and take part in society.
