  • In a Canberra press conference, Albanese said Plibersek was “very positive” about her move from environment.

Yeah I’m glad they’re leaving too. (Not that I have more faith in their replacement)

I can’t recall they’re being a minister or special envoy for men’s health before. Is this a first?

As far as I can tell, yes. It’s a new position and I see no evidence of any similar one before it.

Honestly, about bloody time - any gender study student worth their salt should be able to tell you a few of the issues uniquely facing men and how they impact society. The implied ideas that men are just the default, or that mens issues are just common sense to the man-dominated parliament, or that patriarchy doesn’t hurt men too, are all harmful to our society.

Fun little USA fact: the feminist movement played an core role in updating the FBI definition (used in statistics) of ‘rape’, which now acknowledges male victims as a result of their campaign. Men’s liberation and feminism have plenty of shared interests and succeed best as parallel and complementary movements, or where applicable, as one umbrella movement.

  • Is there a specific issue you are trying to fix or is the duplication the issue?

It’s mostly the duplication, but also that it would frustrate people who don’t want to see all the politics posts. (For what it’s worth, I think politics is important and people should be informed whether they want to or not, but there are valid reasons for wanting to block politics comms for a while.)

Nothing’s really broken, but this is something that can be nipped in the bud if other users think it deserves fixing.

  • Related to tests and skills, What if we just didn’t mark students?, a short talk from a university course runner and educator in general.

It makes some points that are already familiar or easy to notice, but it’s also an interesting exploration of academia, tests and skills. I know some students who learn under that lecturer and what they’re taling about clearly comes through in the course structure. One notable part is that one tutorial class is responsible for making notes for each week of lectures, and the whole cohort is allowed to bring those collaborative notes into the exam, like a semi-open book test. I heard they just decided one class to have a lesson on rhetoric instead of cybersecurity because it’s a pretty nerdy industry and one involving invisible risks, and there’s no point being an expert if you can’t convince your boss to let you fix the problems.
