Nextcloud is technically a solid product if your goal is to replace all the Google services. Personally I think it’s too heavy and I’ve had issues with using it vs using specialized apps for each service I’m replacing.

Stop blaming devs and start blaming the corporate asshats that run the companies.
Here to say Seafile. I also don’t like nextcloud. I used pydio cells for a while but the windows sync client absolutely never worked for me. Seafile has been flawless for 2 months for me.
Docker is a great choice with lots of good tutorials. I personally use podman since all my servers are now running Fedora server and podman is installed by default.
My in-laws have all Roku tvs. I had to go over and “fix” the TV’s for them cause they didn’t understand what the hell this was. I straight up just gave them my modded Nvidia shields and bought myself some more. Fuck that shit. We need a better open source tv like interface. I’ve used plasma big screen but it’s not ready for normal people with not Linux but fixing experience.
For me only certain movies are worth the space on my server that a high quality 4k rip would take up. I do most everything in 1080 and specific films in 4k. Besides that most people aren’t going to see a real difference unless you have a good home theater set up
Chris does most of his talking out his own ass in my opinion.
Even the people I know who aren’t all in on the fediverse are off of Twitter. Why are we still talking about it? The more news coverage the more it continues to exist. Stop covering Elon and let it die.
As the other commenter pointed out, yeah definitely go read through the proton docs but if you are using docker , I recommend looking into gluetun. It has simplified so much for me personally but it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.
What happened to MatPat? I mean good riddence if he’s gone but what happened?
Another recommend for build it yourself. I saw deals on 8tb drives at my local micro center and through 2 into an old desktop I no longer used. Been running that with TrueNas scale for a little over a year and its been great. I did recently switch to Ubuntu server after some docker issues that were specific to truenas though. Honestly given the budget you mentioned, a cheaper minipc off amazon and an external drive or 2 is a good place to start off. Its nothing crazy but you’ll have something functional to see what you need and want out of a server.
Damn it man. I want arm laptops to be good. I can’t justify buying anything apple even with Asahi as good as it is now.
