you only want to make people pay for what they take, and people buying big houses definitely do that.
No they don’t because they don’t pay the whole value of taxes to get services in such an inefficient manner.
There is no home you can buy that is small enough to NOT be inaccessible to most people.
Also what is available in a common/public way.
Some people have to spend a lot on housing just to have a place to have sex without bothering others. Or use a table saw. Or play the trombone. Sew a quilt. Cook a big meal.
If we have accessible, shared locations to do these things, the actual living space doesn’t have to be as big.
The newer, fancier condos have all sorts of sports like gyms, swimming, squash etc. And they have function rooms to throw parties. And hanging out space. If that could be generalized to all people it would contribute to reducing the “how much space does each person need” value.
extremely curious what such a calculation entails?
It would also be fun to have squatting laws like some other countries do. Vacant properties can be taken over (e.g. someone does a B&E then just starts living there) and if the “owner” doesn’t notice soon enough they start losing their rights to the property. If you get mail at an address, if your stuff is there, if you are the one doing maintenance, all that counts in your favor as a resident. Even if your initial entry was aided by an angle grinder. In some cases actual ownership can end up transferred to the functional residence without any cost. The absentee owner loses their rights.
fuck man that is EMBARRASSING for a union of any sort.
a few years ago, my friend got a remote IT job in the UK (from canada) and the VERY FIRST THING they started with upon hiring was planning the time off in relation to other people. it was so shocking to us, neither of us nor any of our friends had ever heard of this before. Here, people have so little time off that the employer can just coast on everyone working a little harder while their colleague is away a little bit here n there. But when you have people with 6-12 weeks off every year you do start to need to coordinate.
Ontario, Canada.
Employees with less than five years of employment are entitled to two weeks of vacation time after each 12-month vacation entitlement year. Employees with five or more years of employment are entitled to three weeks of vacation time.
If you read the link you will find the employer is allowed to pay out your vacation time as a % of pay. This is very common especially in lower wage sectors. You are then supposed to save up the money yourself to pay yourself for vacation when you take time off. In effect, you don’t get any paid vacation.
edit: I’ll also add that you have no right to select WHEN you take your vacay. A friend of mine worked in a factory that shut down for 2 weeks in august for maintenance, painting, service the machines etc. So everyone had to take their vacation during that time; no choice. That is unusual but not prohibited.

9 public holidays

Employees are entitled to up to 3 sick leave days per year once they have worked for an employer for at least 2 consecutive weeks.
This is new since COVID. Which at the time it was introduced, mandated 10 days away from work.
https://www.ontario.ca/document/your-guide-employment-standards-act-0/sick-leave
There are also other kinds of leave like parental, bereavement and such, if you click any links you can see that in the sidebar. Nothing is very lush.
Everything is prorated to a 40 hour work week. Breaks don’t count. So if you work 20 hours per week, you are entitled to half of what is specified.
Any employer can offer more than this, of course. Professionals and higher valued workers can get more. Unions or individuals can negotiate. But a lot of people only get the minimum. Or less. Enforcement is minimal. It’s the honor system.
There are also exceptions like federal workers (government, airlines etc). And farm workers, who basically have zero rights of any sort.
Immigration is irrelevant.
This kind of activity should prompt regulatory investigation from every possible angle. All involved businesses should be gone through with a fine tooth comb. Every louse found: squished. Incarnations and expropriation at the highest level responsible for every violation.
Of course it should be specifically banned. retroactively.
100% true. SDM loves to call young, healthy people on just long term thyroid meds or other simple regimines to do a “meds check”. Then collect their $$.
I think when they open the computer to find people to call they start with 20 year olds despite the whole idea being to help polypharmaceutical seniors.
But zero rentals is a feature, not a bug. Its the point. :)
Everyone gets a grace period, say 18 months, to sell their excess properties, and after that the state expropriates. Or landlord can opt in to expropriation during the grace period. The reimbursement they will get for the properties decreases during the grace period to incentivize people to do it earlier. Maybe almost nothing by the end. Then the state can run them directly or parcel to some structure to administer and fund for maintenance. Existing tenants get to stay where they are if they want.(
Presto chango we have massive public housing.
Idk about making old people move. Its really hard to do. Usually a terrible drama in their lives when forced. Where do you think they should all go?
I think if you were going to do it by bedroom, each person should get 1 room even in a couple because it isn’t just about sleeping. A lot of people will appreciate an office or hobby room or something. It isn’t healthy to be stuck in a room with another person all the time. I don’t believe in penalizing people for being partnered. Welfare programs do it a lot and it really fucks with peoples lives. They have to chose between being “officially” partnered and getting full benefits as individuals, in which case their romantic relationship constitutes fraud. It also really enforces abusive situations because it enables control in bad situations. Imagine if your job could just cut your pay by 70% because they find out your in a LTR.
Canada is fucking huge we have enough space for each person to have 1 room.
I seem to have replied to the main thread instead of the specific comment that mentioned gaslight. Didn’t you notice a complete no sequitur?
This is textbook gaslighting.
Well if I spent 5 minutes instead of 0.5 minutes I might be able to find an actual text book but I think APA Dictionary of Psychology: “gaslight” is a pretty good definition:
to manipulate another person into doubting their perceptions, experiences, or understanding of events.
And it provides an example, from the original source of the term:
a wife is nearly driven to insanity by the deceptions of her husband
It is tres shitty to minimize actual abusive behavior by applying a term associated with intimate partner violence it to this minor thing which is someone posting a comment on some software he works at using an account which goes to zero effort to obfuscate that.
In penance I decree you should watch the movie https://archive.org/details/gaslight-1944 and tell me if it’s any good, I haven’t seen it yet.
I have a much more clear cut policy:
Occasionally someone has a big place and someone has a small place, but this would solve way more issues.
why do they say it’s for “middle class” if it’s for poor people?
I don’t know if I count as middle class. But I remember the first year I didn’t get all my taxes back on rebate. I was SO HAPPY to be making enough money to pay taxes.
Still feeling that way even though I am getting broker over time as the rent goes up and my wage doesn’t.
It would be more worthwhile to do price controls on those loblaws assholes.
edit: replied in the wrong spot. moved elsewhere in the thread.
lol that’s why I don’t know if I count as middle class. because class is about yer relationship to capital. “middle class” is meaningless.
libs won’t do squat. I’m just shit talking and planting seeds
