  • Hmm, I don’t know anything about Whoogle, but from other privacy-conscious search engines, I would expect it to work when you use that URL in your bookmark.

    Three things I can imagine:

    • Something in your hosting stack strips the URL parameters, like maybe your reverse proxy, if you use one. You might be able to see in the Whoogle or web server logs, which URLs actually reach it. Might need to set it to debug/trace logging.
    • Maybe there’s a flag in the Whoogle configuration you need to enable to accept these preference URLs.
    • It’s a bug in that Whoogle version.

  • Nah, I’m not ignorant, just cynical.

I make digital music myself. I’ve had that moment myself, where for a quick moment I thought, surely there could be some ‘proper’ way of rotating an audio source around your head.
And well, there is not, it is always just an effect thing.

As in, even in reality, our hearing is literally stereo, because we’ve got precisely two eardrums, two membranes that do the detection. Yes, the ear flaps shape the sound, but you can do the same shaping with just effects. Make it a bit more muffled when it comes from behind, for example, and hope you don’t need to also portray that something muffled comes from the front. And of course, always slap a heavy virtualizer effect on there.

In the end, it’s smokes and mirrors that our brain then interprets as something spatial. I don’t have a problem with smokes and mirrors. I do still find it humorous, though.

I mean, I can get behind that. It doesn’t increase gameplay complexity and people enjoy having their doggos in different colors.

But adding a whole new mob and items for one specific niche purpose, that increases complexity quite a bit. New players will have no idea what to do with the armadillo drops, without looking it up or being told by that AI narrator thing, I guess.

I did not keep up with Minecraft over the years, only just looked into this now, but yeah, this seems so arbitrary. There’s a mob (armadillos), then an intermediate item (armadillo scutes) and the only usage for that is crafting wolf armor.

Whatever happened to not having a million different items? Like, that’s pretty much game design 101, to combine mechanics where possible. They could have allowed equipping a leather body armor on a wolf for the same gameplay mechanic.
But it really does look like they wanted to add some animal for the publicity and then needed to shoehorn any purpose at all for it.

Oh goshdarnit, I was so confused why they made the wolf fur this weird salmon/brick color. Apparently, that’s an armadillo shell…? They really turned Minecraft into modded Minecraft, didn’t they?

  • I feel like that’s the same underlying issue: The requirements are not understood upfront.

If a customer cannot give you any specific information, you cannot cut any corners. You’re pretty much forced to build a general framework, so that as the requirements become clearer, you’re still equipped to handle them.

I guess, the alternative is building a prototype, which you’re allowed to throw away afterwards. I’ve never been able to do that, because our management does not understand that concept.

  • Mozilla has no traditional profit motive. The Mozilla Corporation, which develops Firefox, is a 100% subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation, which is legally a non-profit organisation.

So, if the Mozilla Corporation makes a profit, they cannot pay out that profit to shareholders. Practically all they can do with that money, is to pay higher wages or set it aside for future invest in their products.

That does not mean that they cannot stagnate or use money badly. And it does not either mean that they never need to make money. But it does mean that there’s no shareholders demanding short-term profit above all else.
