The “Christmas Season” is Fall, not Winter*. The only reason the holiday isn’t literally over when the Winter season starts is that the Christians got their calendar screwed up and hold the holiday on a fixed date instead of on the solstice where it belongs.

As much as I’m inclined to agree with @[email protected], the real reason is typically that all new developments are required to include sidewalks, but existing ones aren’t required to retrofit. So you get a patchwork of sidewalks installed over time as things get torn down and rebuilt.
The “annoying and pedestrian hostile” part is municipalities’ unwillingness to infill sidewalks in front of old developments at taxpayer expense.
Or walkable zoning, lack of which is the fundamental cause of the car dependency.

Regardless, it is completely unreasonable to dictate that people consent to onerous third-party corporate terms of service in order to access government services, especially ones enforced by truancy laws!
Last I checked (which admittedly was the better part of a decade ago), Comcast claimed the first basic set-top box was “free,” but gave you a couple bucks of refund each month if you demanded a CableCard instead.

This instance (lemmy.ml) is one that still federates with lemmygrad, last I noticed. Even then, although the number of unhinged tankies I see here is non-zero, it still isn’t large. (In fact, it’s mainly one particular user that stands out. Y-something, with a name using a bunch of stylized high-unicode characters.)
When I’m on lemmy.world, which I think has defederated from lemmygrad, I pretty much don’t see them at all.
Frankly, I don’t think they’re bothering to try to insert themselves in lemmy.world.
I’m already avoiding buying new cars because of this issue for a while now. My newest car is from 2005, and I intend to keep it that way.

Housing shortages are caused by bad government policy: namely, low-density zoning. Direct your anger towards the entity that deserves it, and make them fix their fuck-up.
(Note: I’m not making some kind of Libertarian “all government is bad” argument here. I’m saying that in this specific case, the laws need to be changed.)
