The barrier to adoption is so often outlier scenarios though.

A vehicle is a huge purchase. For many it’s the largest purchase they will make. For everyone else it’s the second largest, behind their home. They want to make sure it does everything they do normally, and everything they might do once in a while.

As a small example, my family travels to a specific lake about once per year, for around a week. We switched cell phone providers to one that worked better at that lake. It costs a bit more, but even though on an average week it doesn’t matter at all if our phones work at that lake because on average we aren’t there, it was important to have our carrier work there. The outlier scenario actually made the decision for us with all other factors equal.

It doesn’t matter if the average buyer isn’t likely to take longer trips frequently. What does matter is that those outlier scenarios can be conceivably accomplished without significant hassle. And before you say that’s not reasonable, consider that it doesn’t matter that it isn’t reasonable.

People base their purchase decisions on unreasonable factors all the time. How else do we explain how many trucks are on the road?

It does not matter that current charging methods cover 99% of scenarios for 99% of people. The glare of that 1% will shine a light brighter than the positives from the standpoint of widespread adoption. And from that perspective, news of a solution to slower charging is a very good thing.

I’m late to the party, but just wanted to say that your list of purchases and recommended to purchase are just monumental lists of games. So many amazing choices.

I want to add two more if you have room.

Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2. They won’t get you as much in the way of epic set pieces, but they are dripping with charm and very well crafted games with some of the most interesting levels I’ve seen.

Not sure if you’re looking for an honest answer but the funniest/dumbest thing about this picture is that no, the “rules” are that anyone can baptize someone else. So it definitely doesn’t need to be a priest. This entire scenario is completely unnecessary.

Ah the old “it’s what everyone does so it must be better” argument. A classic.

Why would you talk about metric as a whole in response to a question asking about Celsius in particular? I very openly stated that I understand why metric in general is used for measurements of length, weight, and volume and asked specifically why people argue that Celsius is superior when its weaknesses in comparison to fahrenheit are similar to imperial’s weaknesses in comparison to metric.

I would have thought that was obvious.

How often do you convert temperature to different units? Isn’t that what we are stupid for doing?

And I would like to know why precision is irrelevant for temperature but relevant for other things.

I’m being genuine, I’m not trying to shit on you. I’m pretty open about liking the metric system, and I think the reason we don’t use it is largely the extreme administrative costs of doing so more than anyone thinking imperial is actually better. I think most agree it’s pretty clearly worse.

But I legitimately don’t understand how people can argue Celsius over fahrenheit when the arguments for fahrenheit largely match those for the metric system.

One thing I’ve never understood though. Metric is more precise for measurements (at least without needing to involve fractional measures). I totally get why it’s superior for a lot of things, and indeed it is used in many places for this exact reason.

Why would anyone say Celsius is better? Apart from freezing and boiling temps seeming somewhat arbitrary with fahrenheit, does it not allow for much higher precision with regards to temperature identification without resorting to decimals? Isn’t this the same rationale used with metric vs imperial? It seems like a double standard to me, because remembering two temperatures (for boiling and freezing) seems like a small price to pay for a more precise system.

My daughter just turned 6!

• Metroid (she’s watched Prime Remastered and Dread and loves that Samus is a girl)
• Mario Kart 8 (so she can be peach or Rosalina)
• Kena Bridge of Spirits

She also likes playing Pokemon and Drawn to Life now that she can read.

Well you see, it’s important to aggressively gatekeep anything that people start to use and enjoy.

Mine is that I have used Jerboa since I joined Lemmy a couple months ago. It’s improved a lot, and even in its latest iteration is nowhere near as polished and nice as sync. It was an easy decision to switch.
