Can someone tell me why this is even necessary? Network printing has existed for almost as long as printers have and doesn’t require the cloud. There are standard protocols for discovering printers on the network and sending prints to them. I’m on Linux, have never installed printer drivers or even manually set up a printer, and I can print just fine over the network, it just knows which device is a printer and I can send prints to it with a single click. It even knows what the printer’s capabilities are, for example whether it can print double sided. Are people so afraid of the system print dialog that they insist on using HP’s app or something?

Appeal to nature fallacy. Just because something is a certain way in nature doesn’t automatically mean it’s good because nature has no concept of good or bad. Living in “the wild” has a far higher mortality rate than any of us should accept today. By your logic nothing should be a human right because we can always just die if we don’t have it, just as nature intended.

Also, humans originated in the African savannah, which is much warmer than the places most humans now live. And even in the savannah at the dawn of our species we were nest building animals that instinctively would make shelters for ourselves. Housing is as natural to humanity as hives are to bees.

The issue is that Apple had that mentality from the start. Microsoft tried to Frankenstein it in after the OS had already matured under a different UX philosophy, not only that, they also didn’t commit all the way to changing the philosophy since they still wanted legacy support. They basically ended up with the drawbacks of both philosophies and very little of the benefits of either.

Because Microsoft went full Apple and adopted the “we know what’s good for you so don’t defy our decisions” philosophy of UX design.

I think looking at copyright in a vacuum is unhelpful because it’s only one part of the problem. IMO, the reason people are okay with piracy of name brand media but are not okay with OpenAI using human-created artwork is from the same logic of not liking companies and capitalism in general. People don’t like the fact that AI is extracting value from individual artists to make the rich even richer while not giving anything in return to the individual artists, in the same way we object to massive and extremely profitable media companies paying their artists peanuts. It’s also extremely hypocritical that the government and by extention “copyright” seems to care much more that OpenAI is using name brand media than it cares about OpenAI scraping the internet for independent artists’ work.

Something else to consider is that AI is also undermining copyleft licenses. We saw this in the GitHub Autopilot AI, a 100% proprietary product, but was trained on all of GitHub’s user-generated code, including GPL and other copyleft licensed code. The art equivalent would be CC-BY-SA licenses where derivatives have to also be creative commons.

Also pets. Gifting someone a pet does neither the recipient nor the animals any favours unless you know for certain that they both want a pet (and that it’s an actual informed want with all the required forethought and self assessment for both the advantages and disadvantages of having a pet, and not just “a puppy running around my house would be so cute!”) and have the means to support a pet.

Especially if the recipient is a kid and/or you’re giving them a fish or rodent or some other small cheap animal that is considered low maintainance or disposable. News flash, no pet is low maintainance or disposable and you might as well just step on the animal instead to spare them the suffering because a dumb little kid will kill them slowly and horribly. I see this happen all the time and it pisses me off so much. Pets aren’t toys, they shouldn’t be given to children who can’t even take care of themselves.

Actually, please just stop giving people animals without their prior input in general. If you truly want to gift someone a pet, you should be involving them in the acquisition process, taking them to the shelter to choose a pet for example, because the personality of the individual animal and whether it’s suited to the personality of the people that will be caring for them is absolutely critical. If you can’t do that but still want to support their having a pet, then see if a shelter will sell a prepaid adoption certificate, that way they can still choose to not go through with it, or just buy them pet supplies if you know for sure that they plan on getting a pet. There are even species agnostic gifts if you don’t know what kind of pet they plan on getting.

In the spirit of Alec’s pedentry, I must mention that lube does not work by making things moist, instead it works by reducing friction and preventing direct contact between solids. Oil based lubes are a prime example of this as they contain very little water and therefore is ineffective at making things moist but is still effective at reducing friction. Water by itself is actually a pretty bad lube.

Also we’re talking about machine lube right? …right?
